What is an Audio Script?

How an audio script turns out will fully depend on what type of podcast you are making. You will need different information, notes and editing notes dependant on your podcast's genre. Here’s a rough idea of how varied they can be using two polar opposites:

  • Chat Show Podcast: Notes for the host to hit during their chatting, questions for guests, rough editing notes.
  • Audio Drama Podcast: Full lines for characters and VERY detailed descriptions of character movements and environments for the editors.
Audio scripts are simple, easy to follow cliff notes for you or other presenters.

Why You Should Use an Audio Script

In all honesty, audio scripts aren't for everyone, but they're a useful tool when you're not sure what to say, working as part of a team, and need some direction.

1. Know What to Say

Well, the main reason is so that when you go to record your podcast you don’t forget what you need to say. Yes, you might be able to take a breather and think about it because podcasts aren’t live, but it will make your recording sessions a lot longer, and if you have guests, you’re not going to look too professional are you? It acts as a safety blanket to rescue you if you go blank during recording.

2. Editor Notes

Another reason is for editing purposes. Once you’ve finished recording and get your podcast into the edit, you’ll have all your editing notes written on your audio script so you can easily skim through, drop in sound effects or music. Then the only main job left is removing mistakes and “umms”, which should be a lot less of a job if you used your audio script when you recorded it!

3. Direction

Also, from an audio drama point of view, your audio script will be able to provide the details your editor will need to nail the right type of scene for your characters. They’re in a massive, rumbly stone cave? Your editor should see this and pop echo on characters voices, footsteps on stone floors, and more. It makes their job easier.

What to Include in Your Audio Script

There are a few things that are super important for an audio script. Some are for your benefit, others are for your editors benefit, or even guests.

Makes total sense now!
  • Notes: Unless you’re making an audio drama, do NOT write full lines for yourself. When you read full lines out, you’ll end up sounding robotic. Just make notes and freely chat around the points you need to cover. It’ll sound a lot more natural!
  • Editor Notes: Notes for the editor about music or sound effects that will need to be edited in by them. You could also note down extra stuff as you record if you get inspired during a recording session.
  • Scene Description: Audio dramas will need to include a detailed scene description for the editor. Be SUPER detailed! For example: "A cosy cottage with thick carpeted floors. A fire crackles in the corner, the old FM radio plays quietly to itself and the wind can be heard whistling faintly outside. Geralds rocking chair creaks a little with every rock."
